I Love Costumes, Therefore I Love Halloween
The only problem is, as an adult, I usually feel like I put way more thought and effort into my Halloween costumes than other people. And I don’t like going out to the bars on Halloween ’cause they’re just crowded. I really should just organize my own costume party… but then I have to organize a party, and that’s not really my thing. I guess what I’m trying to say is I enjoy making and “designing” costumes much more than wearing them out in public (unless I had a buddy…).
Since I’m being realistic this year and knew months ago that I wouldn’t get around to making a new costume (I planned to make a Quorra costume last year but of course didn’t have time. I still plan on making it, just not this year either), I thought I’d show you some of my old costumes that I and/or my mom made! Oh, and I was inspired to share first because of this post on the Etsy blog about handmade costumes being way cooler than store bought ones and by this super awesome rap by Emotistyle about how stupid “sexy ____” costumes are.
To the pictures!!! (click the image for a larger slideshow)
- (1993) Da always dresses to this day in his period correct civil war union infantryman outfit. Pedro appears to have some pipe cleaners on her head representing bumblebee antennae (all new borns must be bumblebees), I am a witch, and The Older Sister is a mummy.
- 1994 I wore the angel costume, Pedro was a devil, and I have no idea what The Older Sister was supposed to be.
- Tiny Pedro as the Devil in 1994! So fitting.
- (1997) Pedro (with broken arm at the age of 4) wears the witch costume I previously wore and I am some sort of princess or doll in a colonial dress passed down from one of Bia’s friends.
- Pedro dressed as an angel in 1998, you will notice it is the exact same angle costume I wore in the past. We recycle!
- In 1998 I was a bagpipe player! This might seem random to most people, but our grandpa is actually an avid bagpiper.
- (1998) This one probably isn’t from Halloween because we used to go to Civil War reenactments all the time, Da is a civil war buff. Good times.
- I am very fond of my costume in 1999 when I dressed as a bag of raked leaves! Pedro is a mummy and The Older Sister is an old hippy I think.
- (2000) This is a terrible picture of me but in the name of costume creativity I will show you the time I wrapped myself completely in bubble wrap! That costume was hot, literally.
- I must have had 2 costumes in 2000, as a back up from bubble girl I assume (it’s kindof disposable). Looks like Pedro is a demond or vampire, I am asian (?) and The Older Sister is an old woman.
- In 2003 I was a flapper! I’m thinking about wearing this one again this year (yes, I have not really grown at all since then) and Pedro is a terrifying tin foil person!
- (2004) The first appearance of Pedro’s Fish Head! Bia had to borrow an industrial sewing machine to sew through the thick foam. And I’m a princess I think, that was around the time I started making my own stuff instead of Bia.
- I dressed as The Sun in 2008, it was awesome. You’ll notice I had to do some creative cropping to get just me in the picture, my friends were wearing rather small costumes let say.
- (2009) This is one of my favorite costume concepts and I put a lot of effort into making similar to the movie dress, but that also made me not totally satisfied with the end result. For instance, a white dress really needs to be lined! Maybe, someday I’ll try again.
- The obvious costume choice in 2010 was to be Lost inspired since the show had recently ended! This is definitely one of the most comfortable costumes ever. I made one for Mr. Husband too and he even wore it for a couple hours!
- (2011) Bia wearing the Dharma Initiative jumpsuit I made the year before and Da still wearing the same Civil War uniform.
- The traditional baby pumpkin face
- Abe wearing the lion costume passed down when new babies come along, this might have originally been made for The Older Sister (pictured at left)!
