Sunday Doll Post: A New Dress for Leone

May 6, 2012

A new dress and a new pattern! This one took much less trial and error than other doll clothes that I’ve made my own patterns for because I started with a very simple “vintage” doll dress. This dress in fact:

I’m pretty sure my grandma made this Barbie dress, probably sometime in the 60s (solely based on the style of the dress) a mostly shapeless A-line dress with built on bell sleeves. It was really easy to copy because the pattern is only one piece.

Just chillin' in Spot's cat grass taking in some rays

Because the dress is so loose on Barbies, it’s a great fit for LMM dolls which are shaped much more like a 10 year old girl instead of a (disproportionate) fully grown woman. LMM dolls also have pretty large hands which make it hard to dress them in long sleeves, so the bell shaped sleeves of this dress are great for easy dressing.

The style combined with the awesome shade of blue fabric I made it in, this dress reminds me of a Star Trek TOS (The Original Series for those of you with sad, trek-deprived lives) uniform. If only I had some tall black boots for Leone...

I think this pattern would be really easy to scale up or down for other sized dolls too. Feel free to download it on the Patternpalooza page if you want!
