Hm, Pedro asks for a new dress, Molly makes it in just a few weeks. Am I sick? This is uncharacteristic. But I guess she is off in Russia now, then Norway later, and then Russia again (oh I hope she blogs while she’s gone!) so I won’t see her in a while… And the dress was crazy easy to make.

Pedro smiling, I think she’s sick too.

Pattern: M6744

Pattern Description: Pullover dresses have bodice variations, elasticized (seamed) waist, and narrow hem. A and B: fitted bodice. I made view A.

Pattern Sizing: XS-XXL, I make a large for Pedro

Fabric Used: Printed cotton jersey, this fabric is super soft and not too heavy (to stretch itself out) so you would think it would be a breeze to sew. Wrong. There must be some sort of sateen finish or maybe an extra fiber content that is weird because I was getting skipped stitches at least every inch using a zigzag stitch. Strangely I had no problem using a straight stitch, but maybe I just couldn’t see the skipped stitches so it didn’t’ bug the crap out of me. I sewed the waist seam twice to try and get everything zigged over, thankfully it’s still really stretchy there. I probably could have messed with tensions and feeds, but on such a simple dress it doesn’t seem worth it.

I picked this fabric using my exceptional taste and “sewing” knowledge. It’s actually a terrifying story. You see, Bia and Molly came to “visit” me in deepest darkest Denver. But whenever they get together all that’s on their minds is when they’ll get their next fabric fix. Denver, being quite larger than either of their home bases, has a greater selection of fabric stores. I divide fabric stores into two categories: those with comfy chairs and those without.

We went on a fabric shopping spree at Denver Fabrics (not associated with DenverFabrics.com) in Littleton, CO. Awesome store if you’re ever in the area.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, I think so.

Were the instructions easy to follow? I looked them over and didn’t follow them. Mostly because I like sewing the side seams last whenever possible and I decided to bind the neck and arms instead of hemming. But they’re really short and there’s nothing difficult in them.

We didn’t get many pictures of this one because it started raining

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like the simplicity of this pattern, it’s probably one of the most current things that McCall’s has put out recently because this is a dress you can and will find in many stores. It’s easy to make and looks really comfortable. Now, what does Pedro think?

Well it doesn’t have pockets. So where am I even going to put my octopus?! But it’s like my t-shirts that Molly has made for me: comfortable and nice.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: The only major change I made was to bind the neck and arm edges instead of hemming them. Binding is so much easier and give a better result. However I guess I didn’t cut my binding with the stretch so it gapes out a little, but once the dress in on a person it’s not so bad, and top stitching and trimming the seam allowances helped.

Would you sew it again? Yes, I bought the pattern in my size too. And this pattern is so simple and easy I wouldn’t be opposed to making more for Pedro (or The Oldest Sister, if she desired) at some point.

Would you recommend it to others? Yes, like I said easy.

~Molly

It seems to be a recurring event that all the presents I give Pedro are now clothing I’ve sewn for her. It helps that all of us sisters’ birthdays are in the summer, so there is a good gap of many months before it’s time for winter holiday presents. Well, now that Pedro is a hipster living in glamorous metropolitan Denver she wears plaid flannel shirts constantly (the location and the garment might not actually have any relevance to each other, scientific experimentation on hipster lifestyle has thus far failed). I have made her a more stylish version.

Brought to you semi-live from Bia’s backyard!

Pattern: BurdaStyle (magazine) 102 04/2010, I have made this shirt for myself previously (I believe I was wearing it while we were fabric shopping and that is how this came about, if you get my drift)

Pattern Description: For your entertainment, google translated from German: You have three wishes: Airy it should be to sew a bit different and fast. The fulfillment comes in the form of our wide double-breasted blouse that is closed with little buttons. The half-length kimono sleeves are rolled up and held by a clip.

And now from Russian: It is pleasing to the body, air and easily sewn – in this double-breasted blouse, despite her modesty, a lot of advantages! In warm weather, you can wrap kimono sleeves and fasten patami.

Pattern Sizing: 36-44, I cut a 44 for Pedro.

Fabric Used: Plaid cotton flannel

I’m a fan of flannel, it makes me feel happiness and like I’m frolicking through the meadows. That tumultuous void is filled with just the right amount of warmth and intersecting lines at right angles. Flannel, man.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes

The drawing was as accurate as a flying squirrel leaping into a tree.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, I did actually use them some but did things in my own order.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like the style and the double row of buttons is unique. But Pedro is the real judge in this case:

Well it was a tad disturbing that there isn’t a real collar on it. There’s like a tuxedo front deal but no neck collar, that’s not particularly delightful but it’ll do just dandily. I like it.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I messed up tracing a little so the sleeves ended up being shorter than intended but since they get rolled up anyways you can’t really tell.

Mugshot by the mural I painted on our garage/shed in highschool

Would you sew it again? Probably not

Would you recommend it to others? I like it but I understand most people don’t care for boxy tops like this – it’s very comfortable though.

It’s just a delight and a half to wear. I feel like a fashionable lumberjack since Molly usually describes my “style” as hipster lumberjack.

The mysterious stairs to nowhere

I really like this fabric, so soft and very springy (and not from lycra, pretty sure it’s all mechanical stretch). I got it at a small store in Seattle, probably a couple years ago by now.

Pattern: B4198, out of print from 2004

Pattern Description: T-shirt: neckband, short sleeves, braid trim.

Pattern Sizing: XS-XL, I cut a small

Fabric Used: Black and off white striped cotton interlock

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, except for the long sleeves

Were the instructions easy to follow? I didn’t even get them out of the envelope because it’s just a basic t-shirt and I’ve made it several times already, no surprises.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? This is my favorite t-shirt pattern, it just fits really well.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I lengthened the sleeves to full length, with cuffs. Interestingly, this is the first time I’ve used the original neckline from the pattern.

Would you sew it again? Yes, this is at least the third time I’ve made it and I’m definitely not stopping here.

Would you recommend it to others? Yes

~Molly

I’m feeling pretty meh about this one, a mediocre result almost entirely from the fabric choice. But I wanted to get rid of this stuff that had been in my stash for quite a while (one of those not thinking purchases that left me wondering what to do with it), and I wanted to try this pattern out without ruining fabric that I had feelings for (you all develop emotional relationships with your fabric too right? good, I thought so. There’s no use denying it). Anyways, this isn’t especially my style. I feel kindof hippy or refugee (as in Tom Petty’s “don’t have to live like a refugee!”). Or as Pedro put described it: smuggler. Maybe someday, if I ever get around to it, I’ll try dyeing it.

Look I actually went outside for pictures, again! I had to take Spot along also of course.

Spot loves going outside, and is one of those weird cats that doesn’t mind wearing a harness.

Pattern: Poetry in Motion dress from Twinkle Sews by Wenlan Chia

Pattern Description: This great party dress has a deep front neckline accentuated by a crinkled silk chiffon cowl collar and ruffled edge. The dropped sleeves are a snap to put in.

Scanned from the book

Pattern Sizing: 0-16, I was pretty sure there was going to be plenty of ease in the pattern and my measurements were in between sizes 0 and 4 so I decided to go down and use the smallest size. I think it worked out, but only if I’m not layering.

Fabric Used: Some mysterious “linen look” fabric, probably entirely polyester.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes, except for fabric choices

Were the instructions easy to follow? The instructions seemed pretty vague to me, an intermediate sewist wouldn’t have much trouble deciphering them but the pattern is listed as easy and I’m betting a beginner would have trouble. There are some additional general sewing instruction in the beginning of the book (describing basic techniques) but I didn’t look over them. This book is more about the patterns than teaching how to sew anyways, if you’re after this style then you’ll be happy.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I like the loose fit and the sleeves are pretty comfortable. The cowl collar is gianormous and makes you want to fiddle with it but it’s easy to get looking good because it pretty much just flops naturally. I think if I had followed the fabric suggestions and used a really light weight fabric like chiffon it would sit even better.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I cut off 6″ from the bottom to make it a tunic instead of a dress. Now that I’ve made it (and tried it on with the 6″ still intact) I think it would actually be a really cute party dress if made in fancy fabrics.

I cut the cowl collar on the bias, I couldn’t tell if that’s what is intended or not but it looked like the grain lines were diagonal so I just went with it. It certainly didn’t hurt anything and might have actually helped with the drape.

Would you sew it again? Maybe, I think it could be a really cute dress (would have to extend it a couple inches if I wanted to wear it in the day time though) or in a solid color.

Would you recommend it to others? The sizing seems limited, but this pattern is meant to be loose so fit isn’t too much of an issue. So, yes, if you like this modern, Asian influenced, over sized look. But it’s not everyone’s style I know.

This is not only a pattern rehash, but a fabric one as well! The pattern: Cake’s Tiramisu with the skirt cut shorter, previously made in dress format. The fabric: purple and silver striped jersey leftover from the top I made my Oldest Sister for christmukkah. I’m pretty sure the only reason this got made so quickly is because I wanted to pass the pattern off to my mom, Bia, so she could make it and I’ll be visiting soon. Also I started planning a lot of new projects by pairing stash fabric and pattern together over Memorial day weekend, I had time on my hands. Then, poof! Tira-top!

I even got Mr. Husband to take a couple pictures while we were at the park!

I probably don’t really need to review this again, but you can just scroll through the pictures (that’s what I do a lot anyways. I don’t judge if you don’t).

Pattern: Cake Patterns Tiramisu #0144

Pattern Description: Knit knee-length dress with front surplice (mock wrap) neckline, short kimono sleeves and an easily customizable midriff section. The skirt features in-seam pockets and falls in the soft folds of a vintage half-circle skirt. The pattern includes optional stripes placement guide, cup sizing A-D and a bust alteration line.

Pattern Sizing: Just like last time I used a 30″ bust, C cup, and 27.5″ waist. Worked out even better because my fabric is more stable this time around.

Fabric Used: Leftover purple and silver striped jersey

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? The top portion looks just like the envelope, obviously I didn’t make a dress though.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, I really like Steph’s instruction style – neatly layed out and clear graphics (or maybe this is Mikhela’s style since she does the instructions?).

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love the binding and great fit, and circle skirts are the best. The stripe alignment lines on the pattern pieces is pretty genius. I think the waist band could be reduced in width some, but I don’t care enough to change it (i.e. lazy). Really, there isn’t much to dislike about this pattern because it’s so casual and modern. It’s not an unusual design but it’s extremely well drafted and organized at the same time so it’s more than just ordinary. If that makes any sense.

Most amazing stripe matching ever? yes, yes it is.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: Isn’t it obvious by now? I made a top instead of a dress. All I did to modify the pattern was retrace the skirt, but measured 12″ down from the top of the pattern piece all around. Once I was to the point of hemming I tried it on again and decided to cut 4″ off the bottom, I think I could have cut off only 3.5″ though. When I showed it to Mr. Husband he was so convinced it was just a little too short that he had me raise my arms up to see if it would show my tummy. It did not, and I’m pretty sure that’s due to the great fit on top (and the stretch). But he’s right, 0.5″ more would make it just a little better. Oh well. Next time.

Would you sew it again? Um, duh. I want to do a long sleeve version (top and dress, please)

Would you recommend it to others? Yes! Everyone loves cake in some form or another, or they will once they try it.

It’s been a while since I’ve sewn for my dolls, but now I have nothing better to do with my time… So this is a pattern that Anne very kindly gifted me, S2249, a 1930s or 40s era pattern for a little girls dress and matching doll dress reprinted by Quality Vintage Doll Patterns. There were 4 other patterns in the same group, but I haven’t made those yet.

With vintage doll patterns I’m always worried that the finished dress won’t fit my AG dolls because older dolls tend to be skinnier, but this one worked out great. The sleeves were a little tight so I just made the seam allowances smaller. The fit of the back, right at the neckline, is pretty tight though and gaps open, but it’s a doll dress so I don’t care too much as long as it stays on her.

There is some nice seam detailing that is hard to see with the print

Not much else to say here. I think the style is super cute and I need to make more doll clothes because they’re fun and use up scraps.

I think I know what’s going on here: I’ve subconsciously decided that I need to sew as much of my stash as possible before someone hires me to do actual work. I realized this when, for the third day in a row, I was on track (and still motivated) to finish another project in one day. Only I didn’t finish this time because of The Great Zipper Delay, subtitle: I didn’t have one to match! And because I wanted to wait for the Memorial Day sale at Hancocks I stubbornly waited some 36 hours to continue stitching. It was horrible guys, I felt like I was counting down til the store opened Monday morning (I know, zippers are not expensive [not that Hancock's stocks super amazing ones] but everything I wanted to stock up on was on sale that day and I definitely didn’t want to go back two days in a row. Awkward).

Then, zipper in hand finally, in my head I was pretty much thinking “MUST FINISH SKIRT NOW.”

My assistant, Spot

And I did.

Pattern: V1247 by Rachel Comey (skirt only)

Pattern Description: Semi-fitted A-lined skirt has front in-seam pockets.

Pattern Sizing: 6-18, I cut a 12. I’ve come to the decision that, even though I fit a size 10 skirt, it’s just not comfortable and I don’t really care for skirts that constrict my waist. Using size 12 for skirts with straight waistbands like this isn’t a perfect solution because it messes up the fit some, but whatever, this feels better.

Fabric Used: Stretch polyester suiting. The stretch makes the skirt really comfortable, but it also wonked up the pocket openings a little so they don’t look as neat as they could.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Mostly, you can’t see the skirt too well in the photo and I made a few modifications.

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes, I got a little confused on the pocket area but it worked out ok.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? The front pockets are fun and unique, and the a-line shape is flattering, but I really wish it had a curved waistband. I’m not sure if I liked or disliked all the binding on the inside. It definitely makes the skirt nicer, but all my binding is a little wavy because I don’t do this very often. It also made some seams super bulky.

I even took the time (and pain) to catch stitch both the hem and waist band so that I wouldn’t loose any stretch.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: I added an extra band of fabric at the bottom to lengthen the skirt by about 2.5″. With the other seam lines crossing the skirt, my addition actually looks like it’s meant to be there too.

This is how I’ll normally wear the skirt. I just tucked my shirt in for the other pictures so you could see the skirt in full.

Would you sew it again? Doubt it, the pockets are cool and could be reused somewhere, but I already have more skirts than I need and I wasn’t floored by this one.

Would you recommend it to others? Yes, except for the length I think a lot of people will like this skirt (and do like it, by the number of reviews on PR).

Sometimes I think she just likes getting her picture taken.

Well, that’s got to be a record for me. I’m not a slow sewista, I just usually only sew in brief spurts (like a couple seams at a time), but being unemployed with too much fabric does that to a person. At least these are useful tops that I will wear and they even turned out pretty well. I used B4198 (OOP and not even on the Butterick website anymore. Why can’t they just leave their old patterns up even if they’re gone? Like for an archive) which is a really handy pattern for active wear and basic t-shirts and whatnot. I have only ever tried the t-shirt and tank top patterns, but I’m betting the pants and hoodie are good ones too.

The first t-shirt is recut from an XXL men’s “holiday novelty” t-shirt. I reused the neck and sleeve hems, to reuse the lower hem I just cut it off and sewed it to the bottom of my shirt’s pieces instead of hemming like normal. Because I’m lazy. The only thing wrong with it is I accidentally cut two left sleeves, to the right sleeve is a little funky, but not enough for me to care. I should go back in and cut down the sleeve seam allowance though.

The technicolor tank top turned out pretty well. Instead of folding the neck and arm hole edges down and stitching like the instructions have you do, I cut some 1″ strips from the above refashioned t-shirt to use as binding. Only I forgot about the seam allowance so the neck and arm holes are a little smaller than their supposed to be, not a big deal because it still fits well and looks fine. Also, this knit is super silky feeling. I got it from my mom as a scrap that was just barely big enough to get the tank top pieces out of it.

The last tank top is another men’s t-shirt reconstruction, this time from several of Mr. Husband’s old white undershirts (I have them in abundance). Again I cut 1″ strips from another shirt for binding and this time thought to cut off some seam allowance around the neck and arm holes, but (because the shirts are worn and old, hence the mismatched white colors and some ink stains[that you can't really see in the pictures, trust me they're there]) the arm holes stretched out too much. I’ll put it through the wash and see if anything bounces back, and if it really bothers me I can take a wedge out of there. Again, not too worried about it because this was always meant to be a layering tank top and unless I’m not leaving the house I would never wear it on it’s own anyways.

There you have it, three basic/awesome/useful tops in one day, what more could a girl ask for? Oh, maybe that they’re all from scraps and unwanted old clothing! Stash busting like a boss.

~Molly

I wanted to try making loose, swingy tank top similar to Grainline’s Tiny Pocket Tank by modifying a pattern I already had. B4518, from 2005, is long out of print but it’s my go to woven tank top pattern because it’s super simple and comfortable. The fit is not currently trendy though, it’s boxy and on the short side, so I thought I’d try to update it by adding some length and swinging the sides out. This probably would have worked fine except for my fabric choice: a musty old polyester dress from who knows when (the style reminds me of the 50s or 60s, hard to tell because it was homemade in the Midwest of America – the land of slow style changes).

Maybe pink is too close to my skin color anyways…

The dress was from an elderly, Latvian neighbor who was moving out of her house and had to get rid of all the stuff that collects over time, pretty sure this was her daughter’s at some point. I could have sworn I took a picture of it, but I can’t find it now. The skirt of the dress was pretty large and bias cut (or maybe a half circle), but it was tiny. I tried to try it on but my boobs are way too big (and I’m not a large girl). Pink isn’t a color I’m drawn to normally either, but I am drawn to free fabric, so there you go. Anyways, long story short: bias cut fabric doesn’t work with this pattern and because it’s slippery, the cutting wasn’t very accurate, resulting in a too big top. The neckline turned out gianormas and way too low.

horrible darts and stretched out back neck

This will now be the cutest sleeping top I have ever owned, but I think it will be good for that with the bias cut (more movement or whatever). To slap-dash fix the giant neck, I just make a pleat in the center front… we’ll call it an unintended design detail… it’s still too low for a day-wearing top (hence it is now a pajama top).

kitty kisses

I could try my alterations again using a straight grain, but I’m lazy and don’t really feel like sewing another failure or pajama top, so I’ll be investing in the Tiny Pocket Tank. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it anyways.

I love all things star trek, but the original series remake movie from 2009 left me disappointed. So I went into the new movie not really expecting to be wowed, but it was so much better I think J.J. Abrams has won me over. The costumes were especially awesome, the uniforms kept mostly inline with the original series from the 60s but took it to the next level with sleek space suits and jackets. What really caught my eye though was the everyday outfits of the people on earth, they could have fit in fine today with just a little bit more of a futuristic edge. Lots of dark colors, leather jackets with great detail and there seemed to be a lot of turtle necks and scarfs going on. Costume On Film did a great review and an interview with the costume designer, Michael Kaplan.

And, of course, Benedict Cumberbatch really enhanced the movie.
